Cleaning the VARIBOX IBCs! – A very common question we are asked is: how does one clean the VARIBOX FC as it has no bottom heavy-duty valve? Our first advice would be to not clean it at all but to use the VARIBOX dedicated to a certain chemical. The VARIBOX can be made in seven different colors, that way you can assign a certain color to a certain chemical (or group of chemicals). This also prevents contamination and/or chemical reactions in the IBC if it would be filled with a different substance than before. But of course, there are always circumstances in which it is required to clean the VARIBOX.
Throughout our many years of producing all-plastic IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers) like the VARIBOX and its predecessor’s iCon and CKMB, we have been in close contact with SenS Interclean, located in Hengelo (Netherlands). SenS Interclean services, cleans and repairs VARIBOX containers for several of our customers, big and small. They started in 1994 cleaning cans in Rijssen (NL). As business prospered, they moved to Hengelo in 1997, expanding the activities to cleaning also drums, IBC, and trucks/trailers.

Cleaning the VARIBOX IBCs!
For the VARIBOX they have a special station in which the IBC is being turned upside down and then cleaned using water or water combined with a detergent. For a VARIBOX with a Safeline extractor tube, the cleaning system has a separate hose with a Safeline connector. This hose is connected to the extractor tube, which is then rinsed together with the VARIBOX itself. The top of the VARIBOX is designed in such a way that, being upside down, the filling opening is the lowest part of the IBC. This way all the water will run out of it leaving very little residue. After this cleaning, the VARIBOX is put back “on its feet” to be air-dried at the next stop of the cycle. At the end of the “ride”, the container is visually inspected to check if all the parts are in place and working. Then the separately cleaned screwcap is placed on the VARIBOX to make it ready for use again!

The double-walled VARIBOX is available in an EPDM or Viton version depending on the chemicals that will be packed in the container. This will be fully matched to the Safeline system. But of course, the VARIBOX FC is also applicable for other extractor tubes. The full containment IBCs are available in many different colors as blue, dark blue, yellow, orange, green, and natural to match your product coding. Next to that, to be 100% safe the containers are equipped with automatic venting in terms of a pressure relief vent or combi-vent.
