User story with Stabilo The high-quality writing instruments produced in the safest way possible. Once again, a fantastic story about the unique safety aspects of our double-walled VARIBOX Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs). For the official commissioning of the VARIBOX 1000, 800 and 250 liters, our new business manager Kobus Bruins visited the well-known company Schwan-STABILO in Weizenbourg. Curious to find out how VARIBOX is used for this new application, the internal transport and storage of ink to produce the famous STABILO writing instruments.
To celebrate this fantastic moment, Kobus has brought a little delicacy from our hometown of Deventer where we manufacture the VARIBOX FC: the famous “Deventer koek”. This very old cake has a secret composition and spice mixture but is blended with honey. Although the recipe is still a secret, some of the ingredients are known: rye flour, honey, (clean) water, and spices. The mixture of those spices was the secret of the guild and not even known to the bakers. Hopefully, the hardworking employees of STABILO are enjoying this cake.

Deployment of the double-walled IBCs
The double-walled VARIBOX IBCs are now used for safe transport and storage of all the different inks. STABILO uses the containers with the correct colored ink to supply production lines with substances that are required for the writing instruments.
The transparent version of the IBCs
Back in the day, STABILO used standard IBCs and internal silos. Today STABILO has chosen the VARIBOX Full Containment 1000 and 800 liters and the VARIBOX Compact Containment 250 liters. They made this choice because these VARIBOX sizes perfectly match the multitude of colors at the production lines. To be able to see the level of the ink constantly from the outside, STABILO chose the white transparent VARIBOX. So that one can act in time to place a new IBC at the production line avoiding interruptions during production.
The process at STABILO
The Safeline extractor tube that sucks from the lowest point of the container, it allows, in combination with the integrated empty sensor, a nearly residue-free emptying. To prevent air from being sucked in, the signal from the empty detector is processed by the PLC of the assembly line and switches it to a targeted standstill. The container is then changed by the quick coupling system, the standstill is acknowledged, and assembly is continued.
The reasons for choosing the VARIBOX
- Higher efficiency for the raw substances (ink) because there is almost no residue left after usage. So, there is clearly less spoilage and less waste.
- The VARIBOX has a completely closed system. Therefore, hygiene and cleanliness are much better guaranteed.
- During usage, there is no need to open screwcaps, so no foreign products or dirt can get into IBC.
- And the double-walled construction ensures that the regulations are properly complied with.
User story with STABILO VARIBOX FC 1000L
The double-walled VARIBOX is available in an EPDM or Viton version depending on the chemicals that will be packed in the container. This will be fully matched to the Safeline system. But of course, the VARIBOX FC is also applicable for other extractor tubes. The full containment IBCs are available in many different colors as blue, dark blue, yellow, orange, green, and natural to match your product coding. Next to that, to be 100% safe the containers are equipped with automatic venting in terms of a pressure relief vent or combi-vent.
