Why Wellness Landgoed De Valkenberg Switched to VARIBOX with Brenntag

At Wellness Landgoed De Valkenberg, the safe handling of chemicals plays an important role in the daily operation of their wellness facilities. In practice, the use of traditional small containers presented several challenges, both in terms of safety and ease of use. Together with chemical supplier Brenntag, Wellness Landgoed De Valkenberg looked for a more practical and reliable solution — and found it in VARIBOX. In this interview, Marcel Aardema (International Wellness Resorts B.V. which includes De Valkenberg) and Ingrid Kuipers (Brenntag) explain why the switch was made and what impact it has had on their operations.

Can you tell us something about Landgoed De Valkenberg and your role within the company?
Marcel Aardema (International Wellness Resorts B.V. which includes De Valkenberg: At Wellness Landgoed De Valkenberg, I’m responsible for the technical management of our facilities, including saunas and swimming pools. My work focuses on installations for water treatment, safety, and the use of chemicals. In this role, I’m involved daily in optimizing processes around chemical storage and dosing. At Wellness Landgoed De Valkenberg, we place great importance on safety, especially when dealing with hazardous substances.

What challenges did you face with traditional containers/cans that led you to switch to VARIBOX?
Marcel Aardema: In practice, we encountered several issues with traditional small barrels and canisters. They were not only cumbersome to use but also unsafe: spills during opening, risk of splashing, heavy handling, and increased chance of accidents. Especially during busy times or with less experienced staff, things could easily go wrong. Storage was also a factor — small containers were often stored haphazardly, increasing risks. All of this prompted us to look for a better solution.

Why did you specifically choose VARIBOX as a solution for chemical storage?
Marcel Aardema: We needed greater safety and simplicity. What appealed to us about VARIBOX was the plug-and-play design: connect once and you’re ready, without constantly opening and closing caps or barrels. The double-walled construction and secure connection offered extra reassurance. The containers are also sturdy and less appealing for theft — an important factor when working with chemicals like sulfuric acid.

How did the implementation of VARIBOX go in collaboration with Brenntag?
Ingrid Kuipers (Brenntag): The implementation went smoothly. We had good preparatory discussions, so everything was clear from the start. When the demand for chemicals increased, the switch was made quickly. Together with Marcel, we filled out the necessary paperwork and arranged the practical details. Thanks to the simple connection method, VARIBOX was easy to put into use right away.

What improvements have you and Brenntag observed in terms of safety since switching to VARIBOX?
Marcel Aardema: We clearly see that the work has become safer. Staff need to perform far fewer manual actions, reducing the risk of spills, splashes, or injuries.
Ingrid Kuipers: The fixed connections practically eliminate the risk of incorrect hook-ups. Work areas are also tidier, with fewer small containers lying around. All of these improvements contribute to a safer work environment.

What role did sustainability play in your and Brenntag’s decision to choose VARIBOX?
Marcel Aardema: Sustainability definitely played a part. VARIBOX lasts much longer than traditional packaging, which means less frequent replacement and less waste — saving both resources and cost. The robust construction also reduces the risk of leaks, which is better for the environment.
Ingrid Kuipers: At Brenntag, we think it’s important that our customers use solutions that are both safe and sustainable. VARIBOX aligns perfectly with that.

What feedback have you received from colleagues since working with VARIBOX?
Marcel Aardema: Colleagues are very positive. They appreciate that working with chemicals has become less complex and less dangerous. Because VARIBOX is so easy to connect, new employees require less instruction. That helps us work more quickly and safely — especially during busy times or with temporary staff.

How did you experience the collaboration with the VARIBOX team and with Brenntag during this process?
Marcel Aardema: The collaboration with both the VARIBOX team and Brenntag went smoothly. Both parties were proactive and responded quickly when needed. It really helps when suppliers understand the importance of safety and actively support that — which was certainly the case here.
Ingrid Kuipers: Supporting our customers through innovations like this is very important to us. The cooperation with Wellness Landgoed De Valkenberg was efficient and constructive.

What would you recommend to other companies in your sector that are considering using VARIBOX?
Marcel Aardema: Based on our experience, I would definitely recommend companies still using traditional containers or jerrycans to seriously consider a system like VARIBOX. Not because they have to, but because it simply makes the work much safer, faster, and easier. In environments with many employees or lots of chemical handling, VARIBOX really offers advantages. We’ve found that it contributes to a more professional and safer workplace.
