Tips for safe usage of IBCs in the summer
The summer is coming! A sunny time with pleasant temperatures – the temperature is gradually rising. Please be advised this can also affect the pressure build-up in IBCs. Therefore, we would like to give you some tips about the optimal and safe usage of the VARIBOX IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers).
Tip 1: Avoid direct sunlight
When full of chemicals the VARIBOX containers can be protected from direct sunlight. For example, place the VARIBOX inside or under a roof. This will reduce pressure build-up.
Tip 2: Prevent fluctuations in temperature
When full of chemicals, the VARIBOX containers should be prevented from fluctuations in temperature. Make sure that the VARIBOX is placed in locations where the temperature is consistent.
Tip 3: Equip the VARIBOX with a pressure relief vent
The VARIBOX containers can be equipped with a pressure relief vent to avoid pressure build-up. The ADR regulations require such a pressure relief for specific substances such as hypochlorite solutions and hydrogen peroxide, that may build up overpressure. You can also choose to equip your VARIBOX with a pressure relief event for other substances. The prerequisite for the use of a pressure relief vent is that released gases are not hazardous, e.g. in terms of toxicity, flammability, or amount of gas released.
Tip 4: Always wear personal protective wear
We all know that it can be very hot in the summer, but make when using the VARIBOX IBCs always wear personal protective wear.
UV resistance of the VARIBOX
Exposure to sunlight will lead to weathering of materials. UV radiation has a negative effect on the properties of materials. It can also change the color pigments in materials leading to fading of colors. The VARIBOX is manufactured from materials that have built-in protection against the effects of UV radiation. This lengthens the lifetime of our product, so you can truly reuse the VARIBOX containers even in sunny countries.
If the IBCs get too warm, pressure can build-up
Overpressure in the VARIBOX can also occur as a result of a rise in temperature. If a VARIBOX is used without a pressure relief vent, we recommend protection against high temperatures. To avoid the air in the VARIBOX heating up, it must be protected from direct sunlight when stored outdoors.
Overpressure can be recognized by a bulging of the upper part of the VARIBOX. The VARIBOX has been designed to cope with higher pressures, so don’t worry about its integrity. But relieve the overpressure before you connect the VARIBOX. This can be done by turning the screwcap by 30°. In this way, sudden pressure relief and leakage of the contents are avoided. Make sure that suitable personal protective equipment is worn!
Due to the bulging, the VARIBOX Safeline system may be raised and may not function as desired. After the pressure has been relieved, the position of the Safeline system must be checked, appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn.
